Winterizing Trees and ShrubsEvergreen trees and shrubs need protection from animals and wind during the winter months. Deer love to browse on hemlock, arborvitae, firs and junipers. Rhododendron, holly and laurel need protection from deer as well as the winter winds that cause the plants to dehydrate. Protecting your evergreens in mid November with anti-dessicant sprays, deer repellant, and burlap will help your plants survive the winter. Be sure to spray on a day when the temperature is above 40 degrees so the spray will not freeze on the foliage. A second application is recommended during any mid winter warm spell. If using burlap to protect evergreens, be sure to remove it in early April. If left on longer, plants get too warm in the spring sun and can burn. Be sure to use untreated burlap only to wrap evergreens.Snow and ice falling from the roof can damage any shrub or tree. We build shrub shelters here at the nursery in a variety of sizes. Ours have extendable legs to accommodate the growth of your plants. Fruit tree and crabapple trunks should be wrapped from the ground up so rabbits and rodents don't eat the bark of the trees. We sell re-usable trunk protectors that are easy to install. We have all the information and products you'll need to protect your plants for the winter months. Stop in today and let us help you.
